Tracking active weather for Christmas

ABILENE, Texas -

Christmas Day will bring a strong storm system through the area that will bring active weather and much colder air.

We're tracking showers and thunderstorms in the eastern Big Country and Heartland that will push off to the east throughout the morning. Watch out for frequent lightning and small hail with these storms.

As the storm continues to push through, we'll begin to bring snow chances to our northern counties. Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for most of the counties north of I-20.

Accumulations of 1" to 3" are possible in Throckmorton, Knox, and Stephens Counties while Jones, Haskell, Fisher, and Shackelford Counties could see 1" to 2". Along the I-20 Corridor, we're tracking accumlations of less than 1", mainly just snow flurries.

The other big story for the day will be the winds. Behind the cold front, we'll see northwest winds between 25 and 30 mph. This will make the already cool temperatures feel more like the 20s.

The overall storm system will push off to the east throughout the day leaving us under mostly cloudy skies this evening. Temperatures will plummet after sunset, dropping down to around 16 degrees overnight.

Breezy north winds will make it feel more like the single digits so if you'll be out, wear layers.

For your Wednesday, look for highs in the mid 30s before cooling off into the low 20s.

Thursday highs are back into the mid 50s but will drop into the low 30s by Friday morning.

We're tracking a cold front that will move through the area Friday, only allowing highs to top out in the upper 40s.

Overnight, look for lows to fall into the low 20s.

For the weekend, we're tracking lots of sunshine with highs in the upper 40s.

We cool off into the mid 20s by the start of your Sunday with highs topping out in the mid 50s to end the weekend.
