ABILENE, Texas -

Good Tuesday morning and last day of 2013! Today we track another beautiful day in West Texas with highs getting into the middle and upper 50s under sunny skies. Winds will start light but become southerly and a touch breezy into the afternoon at 10-15mph.

Tonight clear skies will be the rule with the mercury falling through the 40s during the evening hours. Expect a temperature near 40 when the clock strikes midnight. We should see an official overnight low in the middle 30s. Winds will blow from the south at 10-15mph.

New Year’s Day Wednesday will see sunshine filled skies once again with readings running into the lower and middle 60s by way of breezy southerly winds from 10-20mph. Gusts can reach a bit higher at times.

A cold front will be knocking on the door in the late afternoon and early evening timeframe across the Big Country. Winds will turn northerly upon the passage of the front and temperatures will fall to an overnight low in the upper 20s. Some scattered cloud cover may accompany the cold front into the overnight hours but no precipitation is in the forecast.

Cooler weather is predicted for Thursday with highs only responding to near 50 degrees under bright sunshine.

Friday we bring in a few high clouds but mostly sunny skies will be in control. The thermometer will make another move for warmer territory as afternoon highs reach the upper 50s to near 60 degrees with winds returning to a southerly direction.

Warm and dry weather is maintained into the first half of the weekend though a cold front moves southward into the Big Country in the afternoon hours of Saturday. The timing of such cold front will impact temperatures greatly, but at the moment we will call for enough daylight hours of warming south of the front to take us into the lower 60s under mostly sunny skies.

Sunday we may start out with a few clouds but increasing sunshine works in as the day unfolds. Temperatures will struggle to make it out of the mid to upper 40s.

A second surge of colder air may be poised to move into the area sometime on Monday. This would be the southwestern extent of a severe arctic outbreak overspreading the eastern half of the United States.

We will be tracking all of the above in the coming days.
