ABILENE, Texas -

On average, heating your home during the winter months accounts for about 70% of your electric bill. Here are some tips to reduce your costs in the wintertime.

Ryan Holmes, with Taylor Electric Cooperative, explains that the right thermostat could save you the most.

"One of the biggest ways to help is if you have a programmable thermostat, take advantage of it. Be sure its set and be sure its running its program," says Holmes.

Set your thermostat to around 68 degrees when your home and drop it down a few degrees when you're asleep or away.

Thermostats that you can control remotely are the most effective because you can control your home's heat and override the program if your plans change.

Change your air filters monthly to ensure your heater is running efficiently.

And check the seals around your doors and windows to make sure that cold air isn't seeping in and the air that you pay to heat isn't escaping.

Instead of turning up the heat, consider donning warmer clothes to stay comfortable around the house.

You can also help to trap heat inside by making sure your ceiling fans are rotating in a clockwise direction.
