Freshman Dorothy Swanson scored 17.5 points and six Wildcats combined for 13 blocks in leading the Abilene Christian volleyball team to a 3-0 win over the Privateers of New Orleans Saturday at the HPC Arena. ACU’s shutout was its third of the season as the Wildcats won by scores of 25-23, 28-26 and 25-22.
There were 17 lead changes throughout the match as well as 30 tie scores, including 12 in the final set.
UNO (3-23, 0-13 Southland), which led by as many as four points during the early stages of game three, took a 22-21 lead on a block by Alyssa Powell, which was her third of the match. However, that would be the Privateers’ very last point as the Wildcats finished the match on a 4-0 run with the final score coming on a service ace by freshman Dorothy Swanson.
Swanson, who led all players tonight with 14 kills and 17.5 points, also was clutch at the ends of games one and two. The White Oak, Texas, native scored ACU’s last three points in its game one victory and broke a 26-26 tie in game two with back-to-back kills.
Swanson was a defensive presence as well, coming through with six of the team’s 50 digs and five block assists. Also coming up big at the net were junior Neely Borger (six blocks), Jennifer Loerch (5) and Lexi Mercier (4) as ACU continues to rank first in the conference with 2.45 blocks per set.
The Wildcats’ (6-13, 2-9 Southland) defensive efforts limited UNO to .096 hitting as Taylor Berry was the lone Privateer to register a double-digit kill total with 10.
ACU sophomore setter Sarah Siemens had 26 of her team’s 37 assists in addition to six kills on eight attempts (.750) and second-year libero Madison Hoover dug out 15 attacks.
The Wildcats’ complete their 2013 home schedule next week with matches Thursday and Saturday vs. Northwestern State and Stephen F. Austin. Match times are 7 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
