Wylie ISD issues apology, correction pages for student being ID'd as rapper in yearbook

Purchasers of Wylie High School’s 2013 yearbook have received a letter from district Superintendent Joey Light noting the “grave mistake” made when a Wylie High student was incorrectly identified as rapper Earl Sweatshirt.
Accompanying the letter were yearbook “replacement” pages for the two where Wylie High senior Rodney Jones Jr. had been identified as the 19-year-old American rapper. Those pages were reprinted to state Jones’ correct name and sent out to those who ordered the school yearbook.
“We have enclosed with this mailing replacement pages that you can insert on the correct page of your yearbook,” Light said in the letter dated July 17. “In doing so, your book will be accurate.”
Jones discovered his name was misprinted in the yearbook at the end of the 2012-2013 school year. Last month, KTXS first spoke to Jones’ family after they expressed their frustration with the error. Jones’ parents claimed their son had been bullied by a fellow classmate on the yearbook staff. The family met with Light about the matter – and Light agreed to have the two places of error corrected and pages resent.
In the letter to yearbook purchasers, Light apologized “for this inconvenience to you.”
“More importantly, I apologize to anyone who may have been offended or hurt by this event,” Light said. “These types of incidents should never happen.”
According to Light, “There will be blunders made in yearbooks, but due to the nature of this mistake I felt compelled to correct the error.”
“We have taken steps to ensure that this type of mistake does not happen again,” Light said. “I take full responsibility for this inexcusable mistake, and our yearbook staff will do everything humanly possible to prevent this from happening in the future.”
According to Jones, the student who made the mistake has been disciplined. However, the measure of discipline toward the student hasn’t been released. It is also unclear what, if any, action was taken against the school’s yearbook advisor.
